Music for me provides true soultime. Soul time. However you prefer the spelling, the calm deep within, and the certainty of being able to continue, comes from this time.
I wandered through songs recently, and this one was one at the core of that session…
“Hunger Strike” – Temple of the Dog, 1990
Chris Cornell write the song and recorded it with the members of the grunge rock band, Pearl Jam.
Cornell died by suicide a few years ago. He seemed at the apex of career and life. One never knows the demons within.
When I hear this song I hear Cornell’s soul as it lives on in the music. Soultime indeed.
I don’t mind stealing bread
From the mouths of decadence
But I can’t feed on the powerless
When my cup’s already overfilled
Yeah
But it’s on the table
The fire’s cooking
And they’re farming babies
The slaves are all working
Blood is on the table
The mouths are all choking
But I’m goin’ hungry, yeah
I don’t mind stealing bread
From the mouths of decadence
But I can’t feed on the powerless
When my cup’s already overfilled, mmm mmm
But it’s on the table
The fire is cooking
And they’re farming babies
The slaves are all working
And it’s on the table
Their mouths are all choking
But I’m going hungry (going hungry)
I’m going hungry (going hungry)
I’m going hungry (going hungry)
I’m going hungry (going hungry)
I’m going hungry (going hungry)
I’m going hungry (going hungry)
Yeah, I don’t mind stealing bread
(Mmm, I don’t mind)
No, I don’t mind stealing bread
I’m going hungry (going hungry)
I’m going hungry (going hungry, yeah)
