Democracy, Low and Slow: Working The Polling Center

Duties as assigned. I’m a Floater. Story of my life.

Like a rover in the secondary of a football defense. Ready to help keep things together, and get the vote in, safe and secure.

Monitor the kids collecting the voting station binders and ballot bags, keep the binders organized.

We’ll see how it goes.

What are we getting?

*Sealed blue ballot bags

*Vote Center Binders

*The Key(s) In The Pouch In The Binder.

That’s how democracy is delivered. Low and slow.

Lyrics Post: “The Trees”

Timeless, and fitting.

“There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(And they’re quite convinced they’re right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can’t help their feelings
If they like the way they’re made
And they wonder why the maples
Can’t be happy in their shade

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream ‘Oppression!’
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
‘The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light’
Now there’s no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe and saw”

Lyrics By Neil Peart

Write. Almost Never Wrong.

Writing is fundamental; indeed, it’s a life skill we need in human society to strive and thrive and flourish. Writing is almost never wrong.

Trying to unravel thoughts? Write them down.

Have ideas to share? Write them up, get them out in the world.

True, writing pamphlets of hate, not so good. Spreading lies, promoting violence, evil dissent through the written word, no thank you. But that too tells you the power of writing.

The power of writing is what it does for yourself and for others too. Pour out the ideas, pour out the experiences, share the words, share the love.

GOOD.

Tribe

A few of the tribe come together, the warmth, the laughter, easy sharing, caring, catching up, so good, so good.

What does the tribe do? Some how through some magic, a sense of belonging, knowing, acceptance, concern. It fortifies, reassures, comforts.

My tribe? At least two. SCHS85, SCU89. When I’m with these people the thick thread rises up from the ground, pulls taught, a line from then until now. In this moment, I know this, I’m better with them, for them, the tribe, my people, stories, lives lived, it gives, power.

The tribe gives power, the tribe let’s love shine through, let’s love shine through.

Compromise 2

The way forward.

Compromise.

“Not every disagreement on every issue requires a war; that’s not reasonable; that’s not responsible leadership.

We elect our leaders to govern; we expect our leaders to govern.

If you’re not protecting our people and moving our society forward, you’re not governing. You’re not doing your job.

The Gang of Six, 2018.

The Gang of Eight, 2013.

The Grand Bargain, 2007.

Consider the art, the duty, of compromise. I believe it’s a fundamental trait we humans possess, and must adhere to, to co-exist in the world. We are a social species, which means we are meant to live together.

To live together, in this world, in this country, in our community, in our family, we must hone the skill and willingness to compromise.

Compromise: the path forward.

Lists

I’ve been making lists for a long time. The practice likely parallels my efforts in school, work, and life to be more organized. It’s been a mixed bag of results.

But the lists go on!

I prescribe mostly to the idea that having one (or at least only a couple few) master list(s) is a good idea.

At least, better not to use the backs of envelopes, loose/scrap paper, post-it notes to keep track of things. White board at home? Ok.

I end up making a few lists: grocery; work (at least a couple, different places, tactical, strategic; personal, those tend to be the most stagnant.

But make ‘em all the same, chase ‘em too. Every day. Do so. Let’s GO~

Up and Down

Up and down things go, every hour, every day. Moods, fortunes, progress, or lack there of.

Sometimes, maybe frequently, the best we can do is keep going. Sometimes the best we can do is take the step forward.

Let’s do that today. Up or down, when things settle, go forward. Let’s go forward together.

Solstice

Funny thing about humans, the things we notice, the things we celebrate.

This time of year, yesterday, or today, the Winter Solstice. Out planet Earth, North Pole tilted as far away from the sun as it goes, the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and then the days start get longer again. Spring is a ways off still, but it’s coming.

We humans are funny, what we notice, and celebrate. Then again, maybe it helps us align and make a little more since of the universe.

Maybe. Just maybe.

The “Wiki-Take” on the Winter Solstice goes like this:
