Commute post: Lane three all the way

My work is about 20 miles from where I live; so most every day I’m in the commute northbound, and then southbound. I’ve driven this highway most of my working life, commuting to different jobs. For a lot of that time I’ve chosen to Bob and weave, trying to improve my advantage by a car length or two, five seconds here, 30 seconds there…

After 35 years in the workforce, I’m starting a mellow. One particular day recently, I decided to stay in lane three the whole way to work. Lane three is the third lane from the left hand shoulder.

it took a bit of intention to stay in one lane, as cars crossed in front of me, as my lane stopped, then started, but really it’s like all the others.

There’s a little advantage to be gained most of the time when you’re in the commute. So as the rain gently fell on my windshield, and I listen to Mozart in the morning on Kdfc, I just bit my time and made my way north.

A couple of times I thought I heard a whisper from Lane one, some person on a motorcycle or fast trackers, zipping by much faster, smirking, and thinking “sucker…“, But I’m sure that was just my imagination, mostly.

somehow it was sublime, at least a little.
