Funny thing, sleep, three phases to consider, all we must keep. I love sleep so much, my shelter, my respite.
There’s Deep Sleep, and REM, Light Sleep too.
The Light Sleep Phase is where we spend most of our time when we sleep; the Deep Sleep Phase is where our body gets the most rest and rejuvenation; the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) Phase is where we dream. Typically we go in and out of Light Sleep throughout a sleep cycle; Deep Sleep usually happens during the first half of the cycle; the REM phase happens frequently throughout the cycle.
With this as a backdrop, a few thoughts on my own sleep preferences, what I try to accomplish.
I like to sleep long, so the more hours in bed in the dark the happier I am. I want to sleep so long I go through two Deep Sleep phases; I need extra rejuvenation these days!
I also like to end the sleep cycle out of Light Sleep; I like to ease back into the world reality from this gentler place of conscious.
I decidedly do not like to wake directly from the REM phase, with dreams receding and bursting into reality.
And I like to wake up in the dark; at least currently; during the work week.
Dark equals early, and I want to be into the work day before the masses. I want to be on the front-end of that curve.
Funny thing, this little bit reveals a well-established personal pattern, I do indeed enjoy sleeping; but I also look actively to sleep as a daily respite from the struggles and bumps that come along during waking hours.
Good lesson. I would do well to hone my coping skills to also deal with those struggles and bumps more effectively as they arise.
More to say on that in future.
GOOD.
