Daily Prompt: “List the people you admire and look to for advice…”
It seems I’ve most all my life been pliable to guidance, instructions, lessons. It didn’t take me ever too long to change course when my parents, teachers, coaches provided feedback.
Certainly as I matured I also had a stronger, more certain sense of what I thought was best. And now almost six decades on the books I would say I’m still pliable; I seek counsel mostly from friends I love and respect; I’m happy to talk to “subject matter experts” as needed.
I also look increasingly to my own experiences and judgement for fresh insight.
There’s a quote attributed to the ancient Roman Stoic, Epictetus, it says,
“… if you’re ever tempted to look for outside approval, realize that your integrity has been compromised. If you need a witness, be your own.“
That said, my list at least part reads thus,
Mom, Dad, Grandpa, Auntie, Heish, Nelson, Graveline, Thorne, Wasley, Melrose, Singer, Martin, Axline, JD, Volta, Criger, Hegland, Smith, McCabe, Bochogolupo, Leslie, Campbell, Rice, Borror, Bordenave, Fiore, Curry, Hansen, Lukes, Drahman, Kresowski, Lopez, O’Brien, O’Neill, Turnbull…
And many others for sure.
