Life-Long Journey

Daily writing prompt
What’s the best way to build self-confidence?

It’s been a life-long journey for me, building self-confidence. I almost put the term “self-esteem” in the title, but then thought better of it. It’s really confidence that has ebbed and flowed for me over the near six decades walking the Earth.

My self-esteem seems more sturdy than my confidence. I think of self-esteem as self-worth. I think I’m in good shape there. But confidence? Not always sufficient.

There’s only one real way to build confidence I think, and that’s by doing. You can practice, you can study, but it’s in the Go Time of executing for real, that’s when it matters.

I don’t like bullshitters, I don’t like cocky people. I like legit doers. And that’s what I’ve strived for. At best I’m probably average when all is said and done. But I keep working at things. I’m open to critique and coaching. I readily acknowledge mistakes, try to learn from them, try not to make the same mistake twice.

Fundamentally my two cents is, if you want confidence you have to do the thing, over and over and over again. Even when you fail.

No matter.

Learn. And then do again.

Keep at it.
