An 11 Year Old & Anatomy of EEG Prep, Process

Earlier this week my son had an odd prep regime in lead up to a medical test procedure – an EEG, or Electroencephalography – he had to have.

As part of the prep he had to stay up until Midnight, then up again, 5:00am, before the sun in lead up to the testing later that morning.

Here’s how we played it.

Shower time about the same as usual; I took a shower after him, suspecting the next morning was going to be hard, and thus not wanting any extra activities to hamper support to my guy.

We had special Italian Ice treats from the shop around the corner for my son and his sisters before bed.

The girls went to bed around 830p.

We played Minecraft for a while. My son’s really taken to that game the last several months. He shows me new stuff all the time.

My son had some smoothie. We started the defrost on some bacon planned for the next morning.

Then around 1030pm it was time for some quesadillas. We’ve got a special recipe at our house for him: corn two tortillas heated on the flat-top, then a couple spoonfuls of Parmesan Cheese sprinkled in between. YUMMY.

And the games…I mentioned Minecraft…but also some turbo fast Subway Surfers…my son is quite good…

So in the end we made it to Midnight as prescribed…and then to the morning…

Miraculously, he was pretty well immediately out of bed when I woke him up at 5:00 am. Crazy. After only five hours of sleep.

Of course, he wanted to go straight to gaming and watching a show or two. Typically it’s no screen in the mornings here (except for reading), but test day was special.

It was bacon for breakfast, and a pretty feeling going into the testing. Good is the prevailing attitude, fingers crossed.

And then he was through it. Shined through the sensors being placed, stabilized, the strobe light test, then hyperventilation test, and then finally, a nice nap to round out the study. Like an hour and voila, data set attained. No issues throughout.

The darkened room, gentle lighting, serene music, expert technician, it all came together…grateful, relieved, blessed.
