Rather than emphasize Cupid and Lovey Dovey-ness around “Valentine’s Day”, I’m opting for the Christian martyr instead. This guy goes WAY back…more than 1,700 years…to the 3rd Century.
He was a clergyman during the Roman Empire. Around Rome. Before Constantine. So that means being a Christian meant you had a black mark on ya. No matter for ol’ Valentine, he supported and cared for persecuted Christians. It was his calling. And he ultimately paid with his life; executed (that’s what martyred means) for his work and beliefs.
That’s just my hot take. Lovey Dovey Love is often fleeting…but Valentine’s Love for his people, that’s timeless. That sort of love needs to be elevated, revered, emulated. Sorta like exactly like Jesus.
